Examining Deceptive Data Visualization: An Analysis Using the Think Aloud Method
The purpose of this research is to promote the development of more ethical and effective data visualization strategies by understanding the cognitive processes involved in interpreting visual stimuli. The outcomes of this study can have significant implications for fields such as journalism, education, and policy-making, where data visualization is commonly used to inform or persuade stakeholders. Ultimately, this study seeks to contribute to the ongoing discussion on how to improve data visualization practices and mitigate the risks of deceptive communication.RQ1: What information can Google Analytics and Google Trends provide for persona development for content creators?
R1. What visual cues tend to capture participants’ attention when viewing risk
messages?
R2 What visual attributes do participants pay the most attention to?

“In the following exercise, you will come across a set of tweets related to weather. As
you go through them, I will be posing a few questions to you, seeking your responses to the
messages. It would be helpful if you could verbalize your thoughts as you read each tweet. For
the purpose of this activity, please imagine that you are a regular Twitter user, scrolling through
your newsfeed, and stumble upon these tweets. Our goal is to comprehend your perceptions
and emotions as you encounter these tweets, so please express your views as you go through
them.”
“During the test, I would like you to think aloud as you work through each question. This
means that I would like you to share every thought that comes to mind, without worrying about
how you express it or clarifying your thoughts. You will work on one question at a time, and I
want to hear every thought you have, from the moment you read the question until you have a
solution or even if you do not have a solution -uninterrupted and unedited. If you need time to
think quietly, that is okay, but please share your thoughts with me as soon as possible.
If you become silent for too long, I will remind you to keep talking. Please note that this
research is exploratory, and my intention is not to evaluate your thinking or explanations. The
purpose of the study is to learn about the thought processes involved in answering each
question. Let us now practice thinking aloud with two practice problems presented on your
paper.”
To assess participant understanding of the risk information, We included two additional
message specific prompt:
1) What is your initial reaction to the message?
2) What feelings do you have in response to the message?
